A brother in the Lord who ministers the Gospel in Vietnam reached out to me a while ago. Praise the Lord for His faithful ministers. May you be blessed and encouraged. We want to be a resource for nurturing God-centered Christians and churches related to the Vietnamese people. How did GSiV begin? I suppose it began as our prayer request for Christ to make his sovereign riches known in Vietnam.

Then the idea occurred that the Lord might use a website to serve as a connecting point for Vietnamese, or those who love the Vietnamese people, who are also interested in the doctrines of grace.

We could say it began out of our desire to see more Christ-centered believers and churches in Vietnam. What is the current state of the Church in Vietnam? It sort of depends. At one level there are healthy things going on—some discipleship, some evangelism, some expository Bible preaching. On another note, some churches seem to be very Arminian, or worse, Pelagian. Many are undefined at this point in their theology so it leads to bad practice. Positively, some evangelicals seek to spread the gospel so the lost will come to Christ.

Give some examples of evangelistic encounters. The Vietnamese people are very easy to talk with. They are hospitable and open to discuss spiritual issues with someone they just met. Many know nothing more about Jesus than that his mother was Mary.

We recall one man we talked with in the last few months. Before long we shared the gospel. He said that he used to know some things about the Catechhism of the Bible but then drifted far from that. He thought our encounter that day was God telling him to repent. What are some goals that GSiV has for the future?

We have to be a bit vague here. But we would like to connect with more Christians interested in Vietnam and the doctrines of grace. We particularly catrchism to connect with reformed Baptists. We pray the Lord will save many of his sheep catecism Vietnam and then bless them with a robust but humble theology that sees him as sovereign in all things, especially in salvation.

And that they carry the gospel to the nations. What are some specific things we can pray for regarding GSiV? Pray for more unity among evangelicals. Pray that in the next few years God will save many and raise up numerous healthy reformed churches that reproduce for the name of Christ. We hope the Lord will provide some sort of a reformed prayer network. No, I am a Reformed Baptist by conviction. It is, to paraphrase the words of Christ, pouring 11689 wine into old wineskins Mtt.

Alan Conner, in his book, Covenant Children Today: The general view set forth in these Confessions [i.

If this principle of infant membership is found in the New Covenant, then infant baptism has a strong ally. But, if the New Covenant presents a different principle of membership, one based on personal faith in Christ and actually possessing the blessings of the New Covenant, then infant baptism comes up against a powerful foe.

Without the principle of infant vatechism, the view of infant baptism expressed in the Confessions above would suffer a major and perhaps irrecoverable blow.

We affirm that there are important elements of both continuity and discontinuity 169 emphasis] between the Old and New Covenants. Yet, 169 practice of infant baptism is based upon a mistaken view of continuity in the area of covenant membership. Thus, Old Covenant membership was based on physical birth, whereas in the New Covenant it is based exclusively on spiritual birth from above John 3: If these convictions are true to the teachings of the Bible, then membership in the New Covenant is restricted to those who have faith, and they alone should receive the covenant sign of baptism.

This is a 11689 departure from membership in the Old Covenant, but it is one made necessary by the fact that new wine requires new wineskins. This is a book that every Reformed Baptist should read.

Of course, I do believe that paedobaptists should take the time to read such books as well, so as to better understand the Reformed Baptist position and conviction. Infant baptism, as important as it may be in paedobaptist Covenant Theology, is not the be-all-end-all of the Reformed faith. What is more, this often comes from the lips of one who knows little to nothing of Reformed Baptist Covenant Theology, and the various arguments that exist for it.

I do believe that more and more contemporary Baptists are learning that Covenant Theology lies in much of Catechiwm history e. London Baptist Cqtechism of The quote provided below is an excerpt from Covenant Theology: A Baptist Distinctivepp.

The areas of primary difference regard the nature of the Mosaic Covenant and the way in which the Covenant of Grace plays out in redemptive history follow this link for a chart that somewhat captures this difference.

Still, the batist quote will assist one in understanding a key way in which Baptist Covenant Theology differs with Paedobaptist Covenant Theology.

For a fuller understanding of the more historic Baptist Covenant Theology, please see the two links provided after the quote. Other paedobaptist definitions of a covenant include O. This is certainly an improvement over the older contract or suzerainty ideas.

This inference from the Abrahamic Covenant into the New Covenant violates the hermeneutical principle of relying on the NT to interpret how the OT is fulfilled in it Galatins 3: Further, the New Covenant membership is defined in Jeremiah This separates the New Covenant fulfillment of the promised Covenant of Grace from the Abrahamic Covenant which included the organic seed of Abraham who mostly were unregenerate.

To infer the organic idea from the Abrahamic Covenant into the New Covenant is a violation of biblical theology and contextual exegesis.

This is why such luminaries as B. This violates the final authority and clarity of the NT. In other words, each divine covenant is a promise of God to man, the content of which must be determined by the revelation explaining each covenant.

This separates us from our Reformed paedobaptist brethren on Covenant Theology because of our hermeneutics. It is the power of the Living God. We are brought to the place where what the Bible says is so convincing that we cannot deny it.

What is more, we gladly embrace what it says. Admittedly, God may have to deal with us in a very personal and awakening manner to fix our attention on the truth of the Bible.

Some may be brought near to death this was my case16899 may have their dreams and hearts crushed. But, it is still God using His word to work faith in us. It has come with power in my heart and has made me a new person. I am a believer because of the divine, creative power of the word of God working in me. The Bible teaches the same thing: We willfully oppose God and His ways, baptisf when we consider our coming death, we fear we will face a Maker who is displeased with us.

We fear the punishment that we know we deserve. The Bible teaches us ba;tist what we fear is catechjsm To keep from thinking about God as our judge, we may ignore the Bible and treat it skeptically, because it brings all of these painful thoughts to our minds. This is like only dealing with the healthy parts of our body, while we ignore life threatening diseases elsewhere. While reading and hearing the Bible preached, we become convinced that Jesus is God who came to earth, died on the cross, and arose again for the forgiveness of sins John 1: We come to know and feel catechsm He is alive and dealing with us in a personal manner.

He calls us to come to him for forgiveness. He promises the forgiveness of sins for all who genuinely believe in Him, because He died on the cross in the place of sinners: He promises He will not cast out those who come to Him in faith Jn. The Baptist Confession of Faith provides a wonderful summary of these things:. I hear your voice in the Scriptures.

I need you to forgive me. I give my life to you. I want to catecism your servant, your friend, and your child. How does God execute His decrees?
