We are particularly honoured by the fact that the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases ingektologie decided to hold again in Italy its major scientific event, after 19 years have elapsed since the first of our congresses was celebrated in in Bologna under the Presidency of Arturo Visconti. For this opportunity we are deeply grateful to the Executive Committee of the Society. The present edition has been carefully designed by the ESCMID Programme Committee under the guidance of Patrick Francioli and with the wholehearted collaboration of the local Scientific Societies operating in Italy infektilogie these disciplines.
As a result, an impressive multidisciplinary and comprehensive scientific programme has been prepared for your attendance. There will be 44 official symposia and workshops, 18 integrated symposia arranged by Industry and approved by the Programme Committee, 3 interactive symposia and 15 meet-the-expert sessions. Furthermore, 8 keynote lectures, to be delivered by prominent figures in their field, have been organised and we thank these scientists for their support and important contribution to the success of the congress.
The programme will also include 21 sessions devoted to presentation of original material selected from the abstracts submitted to the Congress. Others will be discussed in 63 separate poster sessions infektologiie certainly represent the best opportunity to meet people and exchange ideas. The opening ceremony represents a wonderful occasion to refresh or acquire an understanding on the structure and functioning of modern ESCMID and will close with a stunning display of Milan s contribution to the world of fashion, a completely new approach at enticing and entertaining all infekfologie you.

ESCMID is the leading European Society which promotes clinical and scientific excellence, whilst also supporting the educational and professional needs of those active in the fields of clinical microbiology and infectious diseases.

The ESCMID Awards are an established part of the programme and are viewed as an important symbol of rewarding contributions to science. The Young Investigator Awards will be presented at a plenary session on April 26 when both recipients will present a lecture relevant to their area of research.
On behalf of the Society and all delegates I congratulate the recipients of these prestigious awards. The Society now encompasses a large and increasing portfolio of activities. It is also responsive to new challenges. For this reason the Congress will be including a session on bioterrorism and has also arranged a European symposium on this subject, which will be held in Stockholm on June 10 11, 8 The reorganised ESCMID News has been well received and is now an important vehicle for communication between the Society and its Members.
The Society s web-site is also undergoing a major upgrade and will go online in May Over the coming months it will be a reference point for major educational initiatives, including webcasting of key events at ECCMID and the launch of the first ESCMID School of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Ifektologie taking place in Lausanne from July 6 12, Clinical Microbiology and Infection is the Society s Journal and provides an increasingly important vehicle for contributions to the literature with excellent editorials, good reviews, original articles and timely supplements on a broad range of topics.
Emilio Bouza and infeektologie Editorial Team are to be congratulated. I should also like to take this opportunity to seek expressions of interest with regard to a potential successor to our Editor-in-Chief when he steps down in about 18 months time. I encourage you to infektklogie them.
The Society continues to expand its activities in this area and has recently established a further Study Group, which dosrl address selected aspects of mycology. Regine Hakenbeck is the Executive Committee Member with special responsibility for these groups. The Assembly of Members is an important meeting in which the Executive Committee reports on its past performance and future plans to its Membership.
I encourage attendance from all Members. This also provides me with the opportunity to encourage delegates to carefully consider membership of our Society in order to support and strengthen its portfolio of activities. Finally, I do encourage you to attend the Opening Ceremony, which will take place at These have included contributions to the EU Conferences in Copenhagen, Visby and Brussels, which have focussed on various aspects of the strategy for controlling antibiotic resistance in Europe.
The European Commission has identified antibiotic resistance as an area of high priority for research within the Fifth Framework Programme, and again in the Sixth Framework Programme.
