What initially, and I should add pleasantly, surprised me about the novel was the fact that these three witches were just that, witches.

Are the witches feminist symbols or do they reflect Updike’s disdain for women? Some of the best passages seem to have little to do with plot, characterisation or setting; seemingly breaking the rule of eliminating the superfluous; yet you would not want to be spared these pieces.
