This imaginative and entertaining young adult fantasy novel successfully depicts an unusual boy’s coming of age. Oklahoma orphan teen Leven Thumps has a hidden and powerful talent: He is also the only person on the planet who can protect the gateway to Foo, a mythical realm whose existence ensures that human beings in this reality retain the ability to dream, hope and imagine.

Sabine, the wicked ruler of Foo, wants to extend his tyranny by ruling this world as well-but if that happens, no one on Earth would ever be able to dream again.

As Lev hurries to find the gateway between the two worlds before Sabine does, he encounters several friends to help him: Winter, a bright year-old girl who can instantly freeze things and people just by wishing it; Clover, an adorable, foot-high furry creature from Foo who has been assigned as Lev’s companion and, apparently, as comic relief ; and Geth, the wise but displaced king of Foo, who alone knows the full secret of the gateway. Obert Skye’s imagined world of Foo contains many whimsical and delightful elements, such as Humble Pie that apologizes for its own flavor and promises to taste better next time, and candy that temporarily rearranges its chewer’s body parts.

At times, the prose does not match the quality of the story. Debut novelist Skye resorts to telling instead of showing, especially with character descriptions; Lev’s guardian, for example, is “a little man with no compassion or concern for others. However, the story’s pacing is excellent, and the last hundred pages build palpable excitement and suspense.

Kids and adults alike will enjoy this charming tale of good and evil, and look forward to the other books in the series. Grade —Two teens, a small, furry “sycophant,” and a talking toothpick try to prevent evil forces from destroying two worlds in this lighthearted fantasy.

This would destroy both worlds, so the reluctant title hero and his magical companions try to prevent it.

The complicated plot unwinds through a playful narrative that tries, often unsuccessfully, to mix humor and suspense. There are some funny moments, but many attempts at comedy seem forced or distracting.

An urgent race to Germany includes some clever plot twists, as when Leven’s friend Winter uses her ice-creating power to turn an ocean into a road, but their quest never becomes truly exciting. When it turns out that the ominous “Shadows” under Sabine’s command can be dismissed by a simple hand clap, it’s mildly amusing, but detracts from the sense of true danger that makes an involving adventure.

Leven’s self-doubts and changes of heart are almost tedious, and there’s little chemistry between him and Winter. Adult characters are mean, dull, fooo unattractive, which tuhmps in some Dahl-like humor, but soon gets repetitive. Despite some solid humor and an occasionally intriguing plot, there’s not enough cohesion or consistency here to make this a rewarding fantasy. Would you like to tell us about a lower price?

The dream world of Foo is threatened by the dark Sabine and his shadowy minions. Leven, with the help of Winter, who can turn things to ice just by thinking it; Clover, his adorable and fiercely-loyal, cat-like little sycophant; and Geth, the powerful and rightful ruler of Foo, who just happens to be a talking toothpick through most of the book, set out to save Foo by destroying the gateway between that land of dreams and reality.

Skye does an incredible job of bringing his new, imaginative world to life. His main characters, the world they are trying to reach, and even the candy they eat come from a wildly creative mind.

The only downside I found to the book was that it spends a little too much time dwelling on Leven’s fear, other than that, it’s a great read. I’d recommend it, if for nothing else, then for the crazy antics of the lovable Clover, unquestionably, my favorite character. My son 12 read the Fablehaven series which was a gift to him from his grandmother. He was writing book reports that made me decide to read the series. I thought, if nothing else, we will have something to talk about.

Love this series of books!! My daughter has an autographed copy that she cherishes!

I will start off by admitting I didn’t finish this book. I tried this book on a recommendation of another reviewer’s list. Like another reviewer, I was disappointed, it feels like a Harry Potter knock off. I’m not sure which came out first, but I do compare a lot of what I read, in the genre, to Ad Potter. I know this is a young adult book, but it read to me a lot younger. It only took me about page to get thoroughly gatewsy. I can’t say enough goo things about this series.

Thmups found them, as an adult, to be really well-written and incredibly entertaining. I couldn’t wait for each new release, and now am having to settle for the Beyond Foo series featuring one of my favorite characters.

All in all, you really should read these books. Audio CD Verified Purchase. I have listened to the whole series.

From my local library, this audio book was partly damaged. I bought my own audio book to be able to hear the whole story. The packaging is hard plastic, but was slightly broken, so it does not close.

It did not effect the discs, thankfully. Got two copies of this book as going away presents for my 4th grade students. I don’t really like to read much, but when I picked up this book, I couldn’t put it down. I immediately connected with the main character and fell in love with the book.

Now, Obert Skye is my favorite author, and I suggest you read this book. With an interesting body and a dramatic climax, Leven Thumps and the Gateway to Foo is the perfect book to read if you are a young adult, like me. You will immediately want to read the sequel.
